Vocal Vibrations with manishamusic
Suggested donation is $8-$12 (or $5-10 for students)
BE SURE TO CATCH THE LAST SHOW OF THE YEAR & BE PART OF THE LIVE RECORDING!
The evening will open with a full set of manishamusic (featuring Manisha on voice/piano, Blake
Newman on upright bass, and Jerry Leake on tabla/multipercussion). This will be manishamusic’s
final performance in 2002, following which Manisha will take a break from performing in order to
focus on the three R’s (rehearsing/practicing, writing, and recording).
Featured Guest: The Guy Mendilow Band
Multinational artist Guy Mendilow
leads the debut of this band, an eight-person ensemble of accomplished area artists. Featuring four
voices, acoustic guitars, bass, ‘cello, berimbau and drums, the group draws on an extensive
vocabulary, from Brazilian and Israeli to Hindustani, folk, Soul and Blues, in vibrant musical
storytelling awash with warm harmonies, captivating rhythms and rollicking, fast-paced vocal
improvisations. The evening will range from Mendilow originals including playful nonsense music,
the dark, pulsing rhythms of the berimbau, folk ballads, bossa beats and music for virtuoso
overtone singing to Mendilow’s arrangements, such as a version of a Ladysmith Black Mambazo song
reminiscent of Paul Simon. Some of this music is recorded on Guy Mendilow’s album Soar Away Home
(Earthen Groove Records 2001). The evening will also feature music by composer Malcolm Dalglish,
whose pieces for folk choir have been described as a “playground for the voice” and a John Renbourn
arrangement of a fourteenth century traveler’s prayer.
The concert showcases Guy’s powerful vocals as well as his ability to sing with two, and sometimes
three, voices at the same time using a technique called overtone singing. Guy Mendilow is a citizen
of Israel, Great Britain and the US, speaks and sings in four languages and has lived and performed
in Mexico, Brazil, Israel, South Africa, Taiwan, Canada and across the US. His professional music
career began at age ten with three years of recording and touring domestically and internationally
with The American Boychoir, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, with
orchestras such as the Boston Symphony and the New York Philharmonic and with masters such as
Leonard Bernstein and Zubin Mehta. Launching his solo career at age fifteen, Mendilow has sung with
musicians like Malcolm Dalglish, N. Scott Robinson and Moira Smiley. He is now based out of Boston.
The Guy Mendilow Band consists of Boston-based Soul/R&B/jazz vocalist, Lillie Lewis, who recently
composed the film score for the award winning picture, "NINE;" mezzo-soprano Carrie Cheron, who
combines love of storytelling with a passion for blues and Middle Eastern music; Jerusalem native
and jazz/rock/Middle Eastern guitarist Idan Ballas, currently working towards a degree in film
scoring and contemporary writing and production at the Berklee School of Music; New Orleans bass
man Jeff McAuliffe; eclectic baritone singer Lyman Opie; and veteran jazz drummer Mark Nathanson,
noted for his translation of Afro-Brazilian rhythms to the drum kit.
~ Thursday, December 5
8:00pm singasong with manishamusic at the zeitgeist gallery, doors open 7:45pm
Guests:
Kate Klim
Kate Klim is a current student at Berklee College of Music. She came to Boston two years ago to
pursue a career in songwriting and can be seen frequently in Cambridge's All Asia and Club Passim.
With influences including Jonatha Brooke, Garrison Starr and Carole King, Kate's style is a
reflection of all these, with a strong focus on piano. She is grateful for Boston's embracing
nature towards its local musicians, and is thrilled to be participating in this new series at
Zeitgeist.
Scott Coulter
Scott Coulter is a Boston-area singer-songwriter with a background in blues and jazz piano. It has
only been in the past 6 months that he has written and performed vocal music, having been a serious
jazz pianist previously. The music has a strong blues and gospel influence (musically - not
religiously), in addition to a strong element of the folk music of Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and other
contemporaries.
Emily Joy Schiff-Glenn
Emily Joy is thrilled to find herself in the folk scene here in Boston. She is looking forward to
sharing the fruits of a fabulous summer of songwriting. After six years of classical voice study
(she holds a M. M. from New England Conservatory) she has settled into the folk-country style she
grew up with, happy to finally be singing her own songs in this most genuine genre.

we draw from the hat between sets and, of course, our very special guests:
Candida Rose with John Kordalewski
This NAACP Artistic Service Excellence Award recipient (New Bedford) is taking the opportunity to
stray from the repertoire she has presented at other venues in the Boston area in order to combine
jazz standards and Cape Verdean traditionals in a unique multi-lingual presentation. Candida’s
musical contemporaries have included Geoffrey Hicks, Fred Ho, Herb King, Semenya McCord, Shawnn
Monteiro, Jackie Santos, Valerie Stephens, and Frank Wilkins. Pianist John Kordalewski will
accompany her in premiering many of these renditions at the Zeitgeist Gallery.
Carrie Cheron (vox/gtr)
Trained in classical voice for 9 years, and raised on piano, not guitar, Carrie Cheron is excited
to follow her natural instincts down the path she nearly avoided. With a passion for blues and folk
music, Irish, Middle Eastern and other world music, she is thrilled to have found a way to share
her love for storytelling and the beauty of words. Toting some new, some old, and some borrowed
material, Carrie looks forward to doing exactly what she's always wanted to do.
